Customer Comments: I would like a 3 panel fireplace screen - To be used outdoors Front panel 60” wide Height 36-38” Side panels as needed for balance. I'm happy to take your suggestions. We do not want a fitted insert. It's intended to be a deterrent for children.
Our Comments: A 3 folding screen is not the best alternative for keeping children out of the fireplace as they can easily pull it over on themselves simply be grabbing the middle of the screen at the top. The are also not as stable in the wind regardless of the wing sizes. I highly recommend a single panel screen or an attached mesh or glass door. Mesh doors and glass doors that are attached to the fireplace are the safest option for children. Glass doors with ceramic glass have the added benefit of allowing you to close the doors when it gets windy so you can continue your fire without worrying about smoke and sparks blowing about.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle temperatures up to about 1450F and can have direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass.
Outdoor Fireplace Materials: Materials designed specifically for outdoor fireplaces will be stainless steel, solid brass or zinc coated wrought iron, which can be very expensive. Many of my customers do not want to spend the money for these materials. As a less expensive alternative, you can have some of these options made from normal steel that would be used indoors, but you can expect them to rust in a much shorter period of time, and they will eventually need to be replaced.

Wire mesh is most commonly used because it is easy to see through and does not blocks less heat. Perforated mesh is very rigid and sturdy, but it is a bit harder to see through and tends to block more heat. I only recommend perforated mesh for larger fireplace screens that would otherwise require horizontal support bars when made with wire mesh. Horizontal support bars tend to change the look of a screen and obstruct the view of the fire, so they may be less desireable than perforated mesh.
These rare discontinued items were acquired from Stone Manufacturing by Fireplace Treatments when they closed down their Gardena manufacturing facility. They are being sold at half price while supplies last. Most of these items have only 1 or 2 left, so you can be one of the last people in the USA to own one of these rare gems.
Closeout Special WI-AN6 Wheatsheaf Wrought Iron Andirons | Natural Iron | 24H | Half Price - While Supplies Last | Natural Iron: If you are planning on burning anything in your fireplace, you need to have mesh behind the glass so you can burn a fire with the doors open. You can chooe between gate mesh backup doors and sliding mesh curtains. Functionally, gate mesh performs the best as the wire has smaller holes that sparks cannot get through. Aesthetically, mesh curtains may be preferred because they do not have a vertical center frame that obstructs the view of the fire. When you are not using the fire or you want a complete unobstructed view, they do not stick out like gate mesh doors when they are opened.
We are showing these options on a flat steel bifold door with a satin brass overlay and gray glass.
Tempered vs Ceramic Glass: Tempered glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 450F without breaking from heat and should be at least 8" from the flames. Ceramic glass can handle sustained temperatures up to about 1450F and be in direct contact with the flames. If you wish to burn fires with the doors closed, I highly recommend upgrading to ceramic glass. Ceramic glass is $800-$2000 more than tempered glass depending on the manufacturer.
Not all doors are available with all of these glass options.
